actual printmaking not working right

hello - total newbie from UK here.
got a couple of questions so am going to post them in separate threads. first question - i have a speedball kit that i had imported from the US which comes with diazo photo emulsion. i was experimenting with the exposure times (i have a 1000W halogen lamp) and after 5 minutes the image could be seen on the screen as i started to wash away the emulsion. i rinsed as much off as i could but i could still see some blue (the colour of the emulsion) which wouldn't come off under the pressure of the water, so i left it. when the screen was dry i tried to take a print, but although i could see the image on the screen it seemed to barely work at all i.e. most of the ink just went straight through. what am i doing wrong?
