Aluminum platens

Hi all. New guy here. Wanted to ask if anyone had their own aluminum platens made. I have a riley hopkins, 18x18 aluminum platens with the rubber top.
I have a few friends in metal works, but wanted to see if anyone would care to share if homemade was your way to go.
I just can't spend $500+ for these at the moment. Tha k you all.
