base background fade effect

I'm looking to get a faded effect on my background for some of my t's. What I'm looking for can be seen as the black background here http://www.afflictionclothingstore.com/ ... A4420-699/ . I was trying this with standard screen printing and ink but I was unable to achieve the soft faded look, everything came out to solid looking.

That's just two colours on a black shirt a white foreground and a muted background. You could even halftone it to fade it into the shirt still further.
