I know there are plug-ins and software out there to do high end separations. What I'm actually looking to do is to automate the process via photoshop. Is it possible to automate the process in photoshop via a script, or is the process different for each picture?

I'm not clear to what you are refering by high end. Are you trying to print full color on darks? That photo-realism look produced by half tones?
