Cleaning ball-grained aluminum plate surface?

I have a question about what I might use to clean a ball grained aluminum plate surface. I have been using ball grained aluminum plates not as you normally would, but rather as a substrate for screenprints. Meaning, I’m screeningprinting inks directly onto the flat grey surface of the plates and displaying that screenprinted plate as the artwork. In the process of screenprinting, I got some fingerprints and light dirt smudges on a couple of the plates I recently made. Is there a safe way to clean this flat grey surface of the plate without ruining it or making it much worse than the light smudges that are there now? It seems like a pretty delicate surface material and i'm worried about making a much bigger mess. Thanks for any help you can offer. cheers, tom
