How much does transparency "color" matter?
What I mean by that is Do transparencies have to be completely transparent, or can I use a transparency that looks like the frosted glass in a bathroom? I am still printing black images on it, and I am using real transparencies that I bought at the printing supply store. and does this have anything to do with me having "shadow looking" smears on my prints? (the edges are not as clean/sharp as they could be)

Your films don't have to be completely clear where there isn't image but it helps and reduces exposure times if they are.
The smears, if they are on the screened print are most likely from the way you are printing. But loss of edge detail can happen from poor exposing and lack of contact between the film and the screen during exposing.
