I normally print after i wash them, just for good measure, but i was pressed for time, so i just started printing without washing them in the washing machine. Is it OK? Theres always this funky chemical smell when i get them out of the box.

Too much of a hassle... especially for big jobs. I wouldn't recommend it.

The only thing I ever wash before printing is MY HANDS.

Although it seems like a nice gesture, washing the shirts before you print just costs you more time and money.
I have in the past had someone bring me some shirts (some off brand from india or something like that) and those shirts turned my fingers blue.... you might want to find better shirts if you think they need to be washed.
