Halftones in Illustrator

Post by jharmon »

I'm getting ready to open my own print shop and would prefer to use Illustrator over Corel Draw. The one problem with that is I can't figure out how to achieve half tones in Illustrator. I'm working in Illustrator 10 on a PowerMac G4. I don't have a postscript printer connected to my Mac right at the moment. I was wondering if this is why I can't find a half tone option in Illustrator. I'm planning on using FastRip with an Epson 1400 when I get my shop going. Can anyone help?

Yeah... you are correct. NO POSTSCRIPT, NO RIP, NO HALFTONE

Some tips:
Make sure your document is CMYK and NO RGB (thats for internet graphics)
There are ways to simulate halftones but they always look like shit.
Change your swatches to SPOT COLORS (use adobe help for that one)

I would suggest buying a cheap laser printer if you want to learn more about halftones. (not saying that you will use if for screen printing, more for proofing on paper and invoices)
.... I can give you my opinion but I can't tell you if it's right or not.

I'm planning to get a RIP program soon. Guess I'll just have to wait till then to do half tones.
Thanks
