Building an exposure unit - how far from screen for light?

Post by gilbertthegreat »

Hi

I'm planning on using a standard 500w Halogen work flood light for my unit.

The screens I'll be working with are 500mm x 600mm , so how far should I build the top of the unit away from the light source?

Cheers

I built mine (the PVC one that they jack you for $50) at about 16" from the BASE (not from the screen, but the base that the screen sits on) to the light source and expose for about 15 minutes. Its quite simple to build and costs about $6 in material...

I use a 1000W Halogen lamp, I use a Osram lamp used in video lighting. The light is about 30" from the screen, I expose for 10 minutes. My table holds 2 screens at a time.
I've used this system for years. Works well.

I currently use a 4-tube florescent black-light unit and I expose my screens in 22 seconds. I'm also in the process of building a single-point metal-halide unit (1000 watts). It wouldn't suprise me to have exposed screens in 8 to 10 seconds with it.

Though I personally do not use the exposure unit in this video, I saw it some time ago and thought it might be useful.

I know for a metal halide light and separate vacuum table the distance of the light should be the distance of your largest screen from corner to corner diagonally.

Distance

The bulb for your exposure unit should be located the distance on the diagonal of the screen you are shooting. In this case 600mm. Then adjust your exposure times. Invest in an exposure tester (Ulano or Autotype), and strip it onto screens where you have extra area and this will help you achieve properly exposed screens.
