Is there a rule of thumb when it comes to mesh count when printing multiple colors on a garment? Is it better to use higher meshs for multi colors in order for the ink build up on the shirt to be limited or is it better to still base the size of mesh on the artwork?

A rule of thumb that I've read in the past says use the lowest mesh count you can get away with for ease of printing, but the artwork should be the primary determining factor. If you are printing over an underbase, I'd be inclined to go for a higher mesh count to keep ink thickness down. No one wants a shirt with a slab of ink on it if it's avoidable.
