printing on the hood of the sweaters?

Post by freshprint »

Is there anyway to print on the tip of the hood of sweaters? I tried just hanging the hood on the platen with spray adhesive. But the print turned out bad.

I'm assuming you're printing on hooded SWEATSHIRTS?

The hoods are double thick.

Your tack is only holding the inner fabric in place.

You'll need a hold down like this...

It holds hoods in place quite well.

There are two ways to do this.

Because, as a previous reply stated, the fact that they are double layered presents a problem. You can't stick them to a little platen and print normally because they'll move around on you. If, however, they are light colored hoods and you're using a dark ink and a ONE color design, they can just be printed normally.

If they are multi colored prints or light inks on dark hoods, they need flashing which is where the trouble starts with them moving and the registration being messed up.

The solution for dark hoods is to either use a hold down clamp as the other poster said, or make transfers. A hold down clamp can be made by a person with a jigsaw or a scroll saw, or you can buy one. What you need is a small square platen, perhaps 4 or 5 inches wide. Then, using a saw, cut another piece of mdf or particle board in such a way that it fits around the perimeter of the platen leaving a small gap around 1/8th of an inch or so. Then you put the hood onto the little platen and then squeeze the clamping piece onto it (so it fits tightly around the perimeter) holding the hood in place. If the gap is too big, use layers of tape to shim it out to get a good snug fit. You'll still have to deal with the seam in the middle of the hood if yours has one though, which can be irritating.

The best way to do hoods is transfers. If you've got a heat press or even an iron, you can use transfers. Buy transfer paper. Make a positive with you hood design printed 9 or 12 up, and burn a screen and use that to print your transfers. Make sure you burn it reversed! Or else when you iron them on they'll be backwards. You'll need to get some transfer powder which is applied to the printed trasfer sheets when still wet, then dry them and cut them out and iron them on.

I definitely agree with the transfer method, or cad cut vinyl transfers if you have the capability...Be sure to check for proper ink drying temperatures and times as printing on transfers can sometimes result in over-cured ink that cannot then be reheated properly on the garment...I've done this before on hoods and in comparison to direct screen printing them, the transfers result in crisper edges due to the ink not welling up in the seam line of the hood...good luck...
